Phoenix FM's Koori Shout-Out - Finalist in the CBAA 2019 Broadcasting Awards

21/9/2019

Congratulations are in order for our Indigenous Broadcast Team who has made the cut as a finalist in the "Excellence in Indigenous Broadcasting" category of this year's Community Radio Awards. We are very excited that our Indigenous Program Koori ShoutOut has reached finalist status in the Community Broadcasting Awards of Australia again this year.

Our Indigenous Broadcast Team presents Koori Shout-out each Tuesday night from 6.00 - 8.00pm with three on air presenters - Anna Williams, Pauline Ugle and Anne Conway (Team Leader). We are also assisted in various ways by Sue Tuitupou and Bill Whitbread.

Finalists in the category are;

  • Andrea Myers 7 Habits Of Highly Effective Fitzroy and Law and Order (Wangki Radio, Fitzroy Crossing, WA)
  • Chris Crebbin and Victor Weetra (Radio Adelaide, Adelaide, SA)Carnarvon Lock Hospital Centennial (Ngaarda Media, Roebourne, WA)
  • Gurraŋay Matha on Radio (Yolŋu Radio, Darwin, NT)
  • Koori Shout-Out - Phoenix FM (106.7 Phoenix FM, Bendigo, VIC)Excellence in Indigenous Engagement
  • Wangki Radio 936 AM, Fitzroy Crossing, WA

Given that most if not all of these other finalists are Indigenous Community Radio Stations with Indigenous paid staff we have done very well. Phoenix FM did win this award in 2010 and 2012 but the competition now is fierce and the standard in all categories are very high so we are very pleased with ourselves.

Phoenix FM was featured by The Bendigo Advertiser in two stories on 21/09/2019 and can be seen online -  https://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au/story/6396001/bringing-diversity-to-the-airwaves/

Recently returned to Bendigo with a view to enjoying a nice balance of work, rest, and play as well as ongoing involvement in Music and Entertainment.

As a musician and Performer, I’m always looking to find new, interesting, clever and fun music and songs to add to my ever growing collection.

My preference leans toward the ‘Country’ / ‘Hillbilly’ sound where most of my favourite discoveries have been found. Great originals, Interesting covers of both modern and old songs, humorous subject matter and tunes that inspire a  ‘toe-tappin’, knee-slappin’  good time.

I believe it is my duty to share these discoveries with the greater community, and Community radio is the perfect place to do just that.

Our Tenth Anniversary Celebration

22/1/2018

Our celebration on Saturday 6th of January 2018 went off very well in spite of the very hot weather and a Total Fire Ban being in force.  We were in consultation with the CFA prior to the event and we ran everything by the book, had a permit for our sausage sizzle, took all the required precautions and had no problems.

A huge thanks must go to our Members/Volunteers' Co-Ordinator, Noel Paech who co-ordinated much of the event.  We also had quite a number of our members step up and provide great support and help too.  I am not mentioning them all individually for fear of accidentally leaving someone out - but thank you to all of you.  Special thanks must go to John Pearce (a Member of our Committee of Management) and Phil Beer (a presenter) who manned our sausage sizzle for most of the time.  It would have been a hot job but it was very popular - we went through almost 7kg of sausages!

Quite a number of our foundation members came along on the day and of course we also reflected on those who had passed in the last ten years.  Our Foundation President, Geoff Morris passed away in 2013.  We were very honoured that one of his daughters, Jane came along to help us celebrate.

We extend a big thankyou to the City of Greater Bendigo for providing funding to enable to run this event at no cost to our members or the public.

We had four City of Greater Bendigo Councillors attend on the day - Cr. Andrea Metcalfe, Cr. Rod Fyffe, Cr. Matt Emond and Cr. James Williams.  We are very grateful for the support we receive from the City of Greater Bendigo

Entertainment was provided by the band "Steppin' Back"  Phoenix FM presenter Ted Bullow is the drummer in this band.  Other members of Steppin'Back are Chris Varley (Vocals), Fred Goodwin (Lead Guitar), Craig Davis (Lead and Rhythm Guitar), Garry Lane (Rhythym Guitar), Kevin O'Hara (Bass Guitar).  There were several other performers apart from the band who all worked together - these included Floreena Forbes, Olive Bice, Neil Cox and Wendy.  Each one will be getting a Certificate of Appreciation for their genorisity of spirit and performing so well in rather difficult conditions.

Phoenix
FM naturally was on air during the celebration.  We put quite a bit of the music live to air.  Val Hogan and Darren Wright made sure that there was continuity and interviews and Darren had also put together quite a lot of archival material from our early years which ws broadcast.  I think we could very well have an entry into the "Special Event" section of next years' CBAA Awards.

On behalf of all of us here at Phoenix FM I would like to extend my most sincere thanks to everyone who have helped shape this station into what we are today.

Samual Harrison
President

Dawn was unable to be at the Conference in person however she was watching the live stream at home when right before her eyes she saw and heard her program announced as the winner.   She was overwhelmed but very very happy and proud as is everyone else at Phoenix FM

‘World Music Safari – Sounds From Other Lands’ is a weekly two hour radio program presented each Sunday from 11.00am.  Dawn plays an eclectic mix of music from the global melting pot of cultures.  You will hear everything from cheesy French vintage pop, sounds from across the African continent, Gypsy music, Colombian Sami Music, Mexican mariarchi, devotional music from Pakistan and India, calypso worldwide, reggae and all its derivations from mento, ska, rocksteady, dubstep and dancehall, Brazillian music, Finnish folk, music from the African Slave Route, Spice and Silk Routes, Middle Eastern music, music from the Caribbean, contemporary global folk/indie pop, world sould and RnB and anything else that takes Dawn’s fancy.

Dawn Delaney whilst being relatively new to community radio has a wealth of experience and knowledge behind her gained over many years travel as a photo-journalist abroad.  This wealth of knowledge is extremely evident in her program and was certainly recognised by the CBAA.   Dawn does all her own research and production.

Phoenix FM President, Samual Harrison was at the Awards dinner and proudly accepted the award on behalf of Phoenix FM and Dawn Delaney.

Phoenix FM also had one other finalist nomination in “Excellence in Indigenous Engagement” – that award was taken out by Noongar Radio, Perth.

Phoenix FM will be celebrating its tenth anniversary next January and has certainly put itself on the map in that time – this is our third National Award plus we have had several finalist nominations over the years in what is a competitive, elite field.   Behind every presenter there is a dedicated team which actually keeps Phoenix FM on air.   Our equipment is state of the art and we stream world wide
